La journée s’est terminée à Hermanus qui portait originalement le nom de Hermanuspietersfontein. Le nom a du être raccourci pour faciliter les service postal.  Hermanus est à la fois une commune, un port et une station balnéaire réputée pour son site d’observation des baleines.  Bien que nous n’ayons pas vu de baleines, le paysage à lui seul valait le détour.

The day ended in Hermanus which originally bore the name Hermanuspietersfontein but the name had to be shortened to facilitate the postal service. Hermanus is a town, a port and a seaside resort known for its whale watching site. Although we did not see whales, the landscape alone was worth the trip.

Notre prochain arrêt a été le point le plus au sud de tout le continent africain : le Cap des Aiguilles.  Cet endroit, situé à 177km de Cape Town, est le point officiel pour marquer le passage de l’océan Indien à l’océan Atlantique. On raconte que son nom a été donné en raison des nombreux rochers et récifs présents qui le rendent particulièrement dangereux pour la navigation.  Un phare y a d’ailleurs été construit pour éviter les catastrophes maritimes qui étaient alors nombreuses.  Il a été mis en service en 1849.

Our next stop was the southernmost point of the whole African continent: Cape Algulhas. This place, located 177km from Cape Town, is the official point to mark the passage from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. It is said that his name was given because of the many rocks and reefs present that make it particularly dangerous for navigation. A lighthouse was built to avoid maritime disasters that were numerous at the time.  It was officially opened in 1849.

Le 29 novembre, nous nous sommes installés dans un charmant petit hotel de la petite communauté de Montagu pour 2 nuits. À quelques pas de notre hotel, en plein centre historique de la ville,  se trouve un sanctuaire d’oiseaux appelé Leidam.  De nombreuses variétés d’oiseaux indigènes peuvent y être observées.  La beauté des ces oiseaux était exceptionnelle.

On November 29, we settled in a charming little hotel of the small community of Montagu for 2 nights. Just a few steps from our hotel, in the historic center of the city, is a bird sanctuary called Leidam. Many varieties of native birds can be seen there. The beauty of these birds was exceptional.

Nous avons eu la chance d’explorer les paysages des montagnes du Langeberg de façon originale : trainés par un tracteur. Le site où nous sommes allés s’appelle la ferme Protea.  Tristement cependant, un feu a ravagé la montagne le printemps dernier et tous les proteas ont été brulés.  Les propriétaires attendent de voir quels plants réussiront à survivre.  Les paysages étaient cependant absolument fabuleux!

We had the chance to explore the landscapes of the Langeberg mountains in an original way: dragged by a tractor. The site we went to is called the Protea Farm. Sadly though, a fire ravaged the mountain last spring and all proteas were burned. The owners are waiting to see which plants will survive. The scenery however, was absolutely fabulous!

Qui aurait pu penser, avec les nuages et la pluie du matin, que la fin de journée serait aussi spectaculaire.  Nous avons pu admirer le paysage du massif de Swartberg de la vallée de Schoemanshoek. S’installer dans un tel environnement fut un privilège. La richesse des couleurs, la beauté des montagnes, le chant magnifique des oiseaux: tout était en place pour une soirée inoubliable.

Who could have thought with the morning’s clouds and rain, that the end of the day would be as spectacular.  We enjoyed the scenery of the Swartberg Massif of the Schoemanshoek Valley. Settling in such an environment was a privilege. The richness of the colors, the beauty of the mountains, the magnificent songs of the birds: everything was in place for an unforgettable evening.

La journée du 28 novembre devait être consacrée à observer des dauphins, des phoques, des rorquals et des baleines, à bord d’un bateau, mais Dame Nature en a décidé autrement : le mélange de pluie et de vent a empêché les bateaux de quitter le port. Nous sommes plutôt allés observer de magnifiques oiseaux dans un endroit au nom plus que révélateur : Birds of Eden.

On November 28th we had planned to go on a boat to observe dolphins, seals and whales, but Mother Nature decided otherwise: the mix of rain and wind prevented the boats from leaving the harbour. We went instead to see beautiful birds in a place with a name more than revealing: Birds of Eden.

C’est dans la réserve Hluhluwe que nous sommes montés à bord de nos Jeeps pour une dernière fois. Cette réserve, créée en 1897, a permis d’éviter l’extinction des rhinocéros blancs.  Il n’en restait que quelques-uns en 1897 et il y en a maintenant plus de 2000 dans la réserve. Hluhluwe a été déclarée réserve naturelle en 1985.  De nombreuses espèces d’animaux peuvent y être observées dans un environnement verdoyant enchanteur.

We boarded our Jeep for the last time in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve. This reserve, created in 1897, made it possible to avoid the extinction of the white rhinoceroses. From just a few still alive in 1897, more than 2000 are now present in the reserve. Hluhluwe was declared a nature reserve in 1985. Many species of animals can be seen there in an enchanting green environment.

Au cours des jours suivant, nous avons fait trois autres excursions au cœur de la Réserve Kapama. Le début et la fin de journée nous donnaient parfois une lumière douce aux teintes pastel tout à fait magique! D’avoir pu circuler dans cet environnement, et d’avoir eu le privilège d’admirer ces magnifique  bêtes d’aussi près,  est une expérience qui demeurera graver dans ma mémoire à jamais.

Over the next few days, we made three more excursions in the heart of the Kapama Reserve. The beginning and the end of the day sometimes gave us a soft light with pastel shades that was absolutely magical! To have been able to drive through this environment, and to have had the privilege to admire these magnificent animals from so close, is an experience that will remain engraved in my memory forever.
