Après un trajet en pirogue pour atteindre le côté ouest du Lac Inle nous avons atteint la région Shwe Inn Thein. Marchant lentement le long d’un très long escalier couvert nous sommes arrivés au pied du complexe de pagodes nommé Inn Dein.  Plus de 1000 pagodes peuvent être vues et admirées.  Certaines ont été rénovées alors que d’autres ont été largement abimées par le temps et les intempéries.

Fait à noter, l’enfant grimpé sur la pagode de la première photo a été sévèrement réprimandé par notre guide pour son manque de respect.

After a journey by pirogue to reach the Western side of Inle Lake we reached the region Shwe Inn Thein. Walking slowly along a very long covered staircase we arrived at the foot of the pagodas complex named Inn Dein.  More than 1,000 pagodas can be seen and admired.  Some have been renovated while others have been heavily damaged by time and weather.

Note that the child who climbed on the pagoda in the first photo was severely reprimanded by our guide for his lack of respect.

La population du Myanmar est composée de quatre groupe ethniques principaux.  Ces quatre groupes se répartissent en plus de 67 groupes tribaux tous reconnus par le gouvernement.  Au cours des siècles, cette grande hétérogénéité a été à l’origine de nombreux problèmes à travers le pays.

Chaque minorité ethnique présente des caractéristiques qui lui sont propres tant au niveau de la langue, de la culture, de la religion que de l’habillement.

Les Pa-O sont un groupe que nous avons croisé au Lac Inle.  Hommes et femmes portent sur la tête un pièce de tissu de couleur vive, rose ou orange. Ils sont principalement bouddhistes et agriculteurs.

The population of Myanmar is composed of four main ethnic group.  These four groups are subdivided into 67 tribal groups that are all recognised by the Government.  Over the centuries, this significant heterogeneity has been the source of many problems across the country.

Each ethnic minority has its own characteristics in terms of language, culture, religion or clothing.

We met the Pa-O during our stay at Inle Lake.  Characteristically Pa-O men and women wear on their head a piece of bright, pink or orange fabric. They are mainly Buddhists and farmers.

Que ce soit le mystère du lever du jour ou les couleurs chaudes de la fin de la journée, chaque moment vécu au Lac Inle en a été un d’émerveillement et de beauté.

Be it the mystery of the sunrise or the incredibly warm colours of the sunset, every moment lived in Inle Lake was one of wonder and beauty.

En Birmanie, les enfants veulent être photographiés et ils adorent se regarder dans nos appareils photo.

Les deux garçons sur la première photo sont ceux qui ont pris l’initiative d’ouvrir la barrière de leur école pour me prendre par la main et me tirer jusqu’à l’intérieur de leur classe.  Après m’avoir fait asseoir au sol, ils m’ont offert, avec leurs petits amis, un magnifique concert.  Ce fut un moment de pur bonheur.

In Burma, children really like to be photographed and they really enjoy looking at themselves on the camera afterwards.

The two boys on the first picture are the ones who decided to open the school’s gate, take my hand and pull me all the way inside their class.  After having me sit on the floor, they started singing with their friends.  This was a moment of pure joy!

Les pêcheurs du Lac Inle ont une  façon bien particulière de ramer: un pied prend appui sur le bateau alors que l’autre est sur la rame.  Pour attirer les poissons, les pêcheurs frappent la surface de l’eau avec leur rame puis ils mettent à l’eau un grand cone de bambou pour les capturer.  D’autres pêcheurs utilisent également des filets.

Inle Lake fishermen have a unique way of rowing: they stand with one foot on the boat, while the other one holds the oar.  To attract fish, fishermen hit the surface of the water with their oar, and then they push a cone made of bamboo in the water to trap the fish.  Some of them also use fishing nets.

Le lac Inle, le deuxième plus grand lac de la Birmanie, est un lac d’eau douce dont la profondeur moyenne n’est que de 2.10m en saison sèche.  La population du vit tout autour du lac dans des villes ou des villages.  Ils habitent des maisons sur pilotis faites de bois et de bambou tressé.  Les déplacements se font par pirogues, à rames ou à moteur.  Toute la région du Lac Inle est d’une beauté incroyable.

Lake Inle, the second largest lake of Burma, is a freshwater lake, whose average depth is around 2.10 m during the dry season.  The population lives  around the Lake in cities or villages.  They live in houses on stilts made of wood and woven bamboo.  Most transportation on the lake is done by small boats.  The entire region of Inle Lake is of incredible beauty.

Peu importe la région de la Birmanie dans laquelle nous étions, les mamans étaient toujours fières de nous présenter leurs petits pour que nous les prenions en photo.

No matter where we were in Burma, mothers were always proud and eager to present us their young children so that we would take pictures of them.

Le 1er février, alors que nous étions sur la route entre Bagan et Monywa, nous avons croisé une fête de noviciat. Il s’agit d’enfants ou de jeunes adolescents qui se préparent à entrer au monastère pour un stage qui sera plus ou moins long (1 semaine ou …. le reste de leur vie!).  Pour l’occasion, ils sont habillés, coiffés et maquillés somptueusement, une grande fête est organisée et un repas est offert à tous les membres du village.  Le lendemain, avant d’entrer au monastère, chacun se fera raser la tête.

On nous a chaleureusement invités à se joindre à eux pour le repas.

On February 1st, as we were driving from Bagan to Monywa, we ran into a novitiation procession. During such ceremony young boys and girls wear elaborate and brightly coloured costumes, colourful make up and sophisticated hairdos.  Those children are being presented before entering the monastery for a period that will go from a week to the rest of their life. The whole village is invited to participate to the party and to share the meal.  The next day, before entering the monastery, each child will have their head shaved.

We were cordially and warmly invited to share the feast with them.

Nous avons eu le privilège de voir travailler de nombreux artisans durant notre séjour en Birmanie.  Nous avons été à même d’observer à quel point ils étaient travaillants, attentionnés et créatifs. Voici une deuxième série de photos de ces artistes à l’oeuvre. Dans cette série nous voyons un homme qui prépare un motif à sculpter, un homme fabriquant le mécanisme qui permettra d’ouvrir et de fermer un parasol, une femme qui blanchit la soie de lotus, un homme faisant sécher la soie de lotus qui a été teinte, un homme façonnant un bijou d’argent, un homme qui verse de l’argent fondu, des femmes qui poncent des Bouddhas en marbre, un homme qui fabrique un contenant en acier et des hommes qui aplatissent les feuilles d’or. La vidéo montre le travail de ces hommes.

We had the privilege of seeing many craftsmen and craftswomen at work during our stay in Burma.  We were able to observe how they were hard-working, caring and creative.  Here is a second set of photos of those creative people at work. In this set we see a man preparing a pattern to be carved, a man making the mechanism that will open and close a parasol, a woman bleaching lotus silk yarn, a man drying the freshly died lotus silk, a man working on a silver piece of jewelry, a man pouring molten silver, women sanding marble Buddhas, a man preparing a tin container and men goldbeating. The video shows how hard these men work at pounding the gold.
