La matinée a été consacrée à la visite du musée de la Nubie.

Après le diner, les amarres ont été levées et nous avons pu observer la vie tout au long du Nil.

En fin d’après-midi, nous sommes arrivés aux temples de Kom Ombo qui sont consacrés aux divinités Sobek le crocodile et Haroéris à tête de faucon.

February 18

The morning was devoted to visiting the Nubia Museum. 

After dinner, the moorings were lifted and we were able to observe life all along the Nile. 

At the end of the afternoon, we arrived at the temples of Kom Ombo which are dedicated to the deities Sobek the crocodile and Haroéris with the head of a falcon.

La journée a débuté avec un vol en direction d’Assouan où, dès notre arrivée, nous sommes allés visiter l’ancienne carrière où repose un obélisque inachevé.

Cet obélisque, le plus grand jamais taillé, a été abandonné probablement parce qu’il s’est fendu durant la taille. Sa base est toujours attachée au lit de granit.

Nous nous sommes ensuite dirigés vers le bateau qui serait notre demeure pour les prochains jours.  

En après-midi, nous avons navigué à bord d’une felouque.

February 17

The day started with a flight to Aswan where, as soon as we arrived, we went to visit the old quarry where an unfinished obelisk rests. 

This obelisk, the largest ever cut, was probably abandoned because it split during cutting. Its base is still attached to the granite bed. 

We then headed to the boat which would be our home for the next few days. 

In the afternoon, we sailed aboard a felucca.

Nous avons pris la route très tôt pour nous rendre à Ambou Simbel où nous avons pu admirer les temples érigés en l’honneur de Ramses II et de son épouse favorite, Nerfertari. 

Ces temples ont été érigés par Ramses II pour commémorer sa victoire à la bataille de Qadesh.

Ces deux temples ont également été sauvés de l’immersion en étant déplacés minutieusement, bloc par bloc et reconstruit un peu plus loin.

Nous nous sommes installés pour une nuit à Abou Simbel sur les rives du lac Nasser.

February 16

We left our hotel very early to go to Ambou Simbel where we could admire the temples erected in honor of Ramses II and his favorite wife, Nerfertari.   

These temples were erected by Ramses II to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. 

These two temples were also saved from submersion by being carefully moved block by block and rebuilt a little further. 

We settled in for one night at Abu Simbel on the shores of Lake Nasser.

Les magnifiques peintures colorées de ce temple racontent l’histoire d’amour entre Osiris et la déesse Isis. 

C’est un des temples qui ont été sauvés de l’immersion en étant déplacés minutieusement, bloc par bloc, et reconstruit un peu plus loin.

February 15

The morning was devoted to visiting the temple of Philae. 

The magnificent colorful paintings of this temple tell the love story between Osiris and the goddess Isis. 

It is one of the temples that were saved from immersion by being carefully moved, block by block, and rebuilt a little further.

Toujours au Caire, nous sommes allés visiter le nouveau Musée national de la civilisation égyptienne où nous avons pu admirer, sans les photographier, 22 momies des rois et des reines d’Égypte ancienne.

Se tenir debout, tout près de ces momies était tout à fait exceptionnel!

Nous sommes ensuite allés visiter le Musée copte. Le terme copte regroupe les différents chrétiens d’Égypte.  Ils sont très majoritairement orthodoxes, mais aussi catholiques et protestants

Par la suite, nous avons pris l’avion vers Assouan.

February 14

Still in Cairo, we went to visit the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilization where we were able to admire, without photographing them, 22 mummies of ancient Egyptian kings and queens. 

To be able to stand up close to these mummies was quite exceptional! 

We then went to visit the Coptic Museum. The term Coptic brings together the different Christians of Egypt. They are overwhelmingly Orthodox, but also Catholics and Protestants. 

We then flew to Aswan.

Après le diner nous sommes allés découvrir la nécropole royale de Saqqarah à l’intérieur de laquelle on retrouve le complexe funéraire du roi Djéser.

After dinner we went to discover the royal necropolis of Saqqara inside which we can admire King Djoser funerary complex.

13 février, matinée

Notre premier arrêt de la journée a été au musée à ciel ouvert de Memphis où nous avons pu admirer un sphynx ainsi qu’un colosse et une statue couchée de Ramses II.

Nous avons ensuite repris la route vers Dahshour où nous avons pu pénétrer dans la pyramide rhomboïdale ainsi que la pyramide rouge.

February 13, morning

Our first stop of the day was at the open-air museum of Memphis where we were able to admire a sphynx as well as a colossus and a reclining statue of Ramses II. 

We then drove to Dahshour where we were able to enter the rhomboidal pyramid as well as the red pyramid.

Après une courte visite dans une fabrique de papyrus, nous nous sommes dirigés vers le plateau de Gizeh où nous avons admiré le Sphinx ainsi que les trois pyramides Khéops, Mykérinos et Khéphren. 

Nous avons eu le privilège de pénétrer au cœur de Khéops.

After a short visit to a papyrus factory, we headed to the Giza plateau where we admired the Sphinx as well as the three Cheops, Mykerinos and Chephren pyramids.

We had the privilege of penetrating into the heart of Cheops.

C’est sous la pluie que nous avons visité la forteresse Qaitbay dans la ville de Rosette. C’est à cet endroit que la pierre de Rosette a été découverte.  C’est elle qui a permis le déchiffrement de hiéroglyphes au XIXe siècle.

It was in the rain that we visited the Qaitbay fortress in the city of Rosetta. This is where the Rosetta Stone was discovered. It was the key to deciphering of hieroglyphics in the 19th century.

10 février

Notre exploration d’Alexandrie a débuté avec la visite des catacombes de Kaum-esh-Shukafa
qui est le plus grand site funéraire romain d’Égypte.

Nous sommes ensuite allés découvrir le sanctuaire Serapeum qui est dédié à la divinité gréco-égyptienne Sérapis.

Nous avons rejoint la butte Kom el-Dick pour y admirer l’amphithéâtre romain et la villa au parterre d’oiseaux.

Nous avons finalement terminé les visites de la journée au Musée National d’Alexandrie.

February 10

Our exploration of Alexandria began with a visit to the Kaum-esh-Shukafa catacombswhich is the largest Roman burial site in Egypt. 

We then went to discover the Serapeum sanctuary which is dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian deity Serapis. 

We reached the Kom el-Dick mound to admire the Roman amphitheater and the villa with the bird mosaïc.

We finally finished the day’s visits to the National Museum of Alexandria.
